R&P: What Do You Think Of Vol.1 Of The Neil Young Archives Collection?
I’m a really huge Neil Young fan, he’s probably my favourite artist, and was just wondering about the first volume of the Archives collection that’s been released. I was very interested in getting it when it was released but the price put me off, it’s about 195 euro over here.
So, for those that have bought it, what do you think of it and was it worth the money?
BQ: Favourite Neil Young song/album?
BQ2: Favourite compilation?
BQ3: Now playing?
The first volume has a load of rare and unreleased stuff from 1963-1972

Hey Amnesiac I saw that NY special too, it was great. I wished I had thought of taping it though.
oh, thats out now? let me go get it and I’ll let you know.
..if its good maybe i’ll actually buy it.
*oh, I see that one too. thats a big file, its gonna take a minute, or 200.

hmm, disc 00 &01/the early years
The tracks from “the squires” sounds like neil sitting in with dick dale or the ventures, alright, but could live w/o it. mostly instrumentals. The buffalo springfield tracks are good, but like said below, most of them are available on already released albums. The one previously unreleased track “sell out” is pretty good.
Sugar Mountain demo sounds like he’s playing a ukulele, but not the worst ive ever heard. all in all theres a few unreleased tracks that make these two discs worth going through, but i doubt i would just throw them in for my random listening pleasure. ..on to the next 7 discs….
disc 2 / Topanga 1
track 1 – very good. i wish i had that 45. all the unreleased versions are good like the released ones. surely youve heard most of this cd if your a fan of neil. ……
disc 3 /live at the riverboat 1969
nice. very clean, sounds like its in a studio, but there were probably only about 30 people in the venue. Im only a few tracks into it, but i would buy this if I found it alone and listen to it w/o skipping tracks. could live w/o his commentary, but its funny to hear him sound like he just finished puberty.
disc 4 / topanga 2
surprisingly, no versions of sugar mountain.
good. heard one, heard ‘em all on this cd.
disc 5 / live at the fillmore east
sounds like.. uh, well, sounds like a neil young and crazy horse show. but why was that show only 43 minutes long? I guess they wore themselves out with the cowgirl in the sand.
disc 6 / topanga 3
some of the unreleased csn&y stuff really needed cs&n to shut the hell up, one of the tracks has them carrying on over some kind of stupidness for over 2 minutes into the track. equipment trouble I think. when they get to the songs theyre excellent like you’d expect. otherwise, if you alreay have “after the goldrush”, this cd is not a must have.
(unless theres something to those 3 hidden tracks, which i did not find/notice. I was kinda busy making dinner while listening.)
disc 7 / live at massey hall 1971
definitely more of a “concert hall” sound, in the best possible way. two encores, first down by the river and dance dance dance, its just the crowd raging for half of track 16 until he came back with I am a child. this is a must have.
disc 8 / north country
I like harvest, I have harvest, I dont need dupes of the same tracks. the unreleased heart of gold seems alittle faster than im used to, still good, but doesnt rival any other ive heard before.
eh.. I wont spend $100 on it. *If* I didnt already have much of this it would be a score purchase at $100, but I do, already have alot of it.
If your loaded or the bills are caught up and you have nothing else pending to put that money towards, then go for it.

Archives of War (Six-Volume Boxed Set) [VHS] $99.98 This six-tape boxed set focusing on wars of the 20th century takes an unusual approach by utilizing seldom seen films and newsreel clips while eschewing the conventions of historical documentaries. There are no historians interviewed on camera providing perspective, and what background information is offered appears in occasional screens of scrolling text. For the most part, vintage black and… |

Archives of War, Vol. 1 – World War I and the Interwar Years [VHS] $19.98 This first installment of a video collection focusing on 20th century warfare takes a decidedly eccentric approach by using as its centerpiece a British theatrical release shot in the 1920s. This sounds quite odd, but it does make some surprising sense, as the silent film, The Battle of Ypres, was produced to resemble a World War I documentary, though it employed actors dressed in uniform. Th… |

TCM Archives – Forbidden Hollywood Collection, Vol. 1 (Waterloo Bridge [1931] / Baby Face / Red-Headed Woman) $18.99 Here are three films that couldn’t and wouldn’t have been made at any other time. Contrary to popular belief, the history of Hollywood permissiveness, what filmmakers could “get away with” on screen, is not a steadily rising graph from puritanical early days to the party-hearty present. In the early 1930s, a national mood of shock over the stock market crash and impatience with Prohibition licen… |

Lucas Archives Volume 1 $78.99 The LucasArts Archives Volume 1 proves that a game doesn’t have to be new to be great. In one box you get three of the most creative adventure games ever produced, as well as a so-so Star Wars screen saver and a stingy three-level demo of Rebel Assault. The adventure games at the core of this collection are well worth the price of admission. First, there’s Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atla… |
