Movie Adaptation
How to find if the rights of a novel from 1933 are available for a movie adaptation?
The author died in 1974. How can I find if I have to pay royalties ?
Sorry about those who clearly do not understand your question.
I’ve done a lot of cinematography in my life, and while I have never done many adaptations I will say that your best bet is going to be from the book’s publisher.
For example, if you cared to adapt Stephen King’s “The Dark Tower” series’ “Gunslinger, you would contact Viking, as they hold the publisher information.
You will also have to contact the author directly, but if they’re dead and the work is still under copyright (©) then the Publisher will suffice if they are not survived by anyone who was given rights to their work. (This information can be gotten from the publisher).
Furthermore, it is worth noting that copyright (©) will only last 50 years, afterwords the work is considered “Public Domain.” An example of this is how ever copy of Windows XP comes with one of Beethoven’s compositions as sample music.
