R&P: What Do You Think Of Vol.1 Of The Neil Young Archives Collection?
I’m a really huge Neil Young fan, he’s probably my favourite artist, and was just wondering about the first volume of the Archives collection that’s been released. I was very interested in getting it when it was released but the price put me off, it’s about 195 euro over here.
So, for those that have bought it, what do you think of it and was it worth the money?

hmm, disc 00 &01/the early years
The tracks from “the squires” sounds like neil sitting in with dick dale or the ventures, alright, but could live w/o it. mostly instrumentals. The buffalo springfield tracks are good, but like said below, most of them are available on already released albums. The one previously unreleased track “sell out” is pretty good.
Sugar Mountain demo sounds like he’s playing a ukulele, but not the worst ive ever heard. all in all theres a few unreleased tracks that make these two discs worth going through, but i doubt i would just throw them in for my random listening pleasure. ..on to the next 7 discs….
disc 2 / Topanga 1
track 1 – very good. i wish i had that 45. all the unreleased versions are good like the released ones. surely youve heard most of this cd if your a fan of neil. ……
disc 3 /live at the riverboat 1969
nice. very clean, sounds like its in a studio, but there were probably only about 30 people in the venue. Im only a few tracks into it, but i would buy this if I found it alone and listen to it w/o skipping tracks. could live w/o his commentary, but its funny to hear him sound like he just finished puberty.

surprisingly, no versions of sugar mountain.
good. heard one, heard ‘em all on this cd.
disc 5 / live at the fillmore east
sounds like.. uh, well, sounds like a neil young and crazy horse show. but why was that show only 43 minutes long? I guess they wore themselves out with the cowgirl in the sand.
disc 6 / topanga 3
some of the unreleased csn&y stuff really needed cs&n to shut the hell up, one of the tracks has them carrying on over some kind of stupidness for over 2 minutes into the track. equipment trouble I think. when they get to the songs theyre excellent like you’d expect. otherwise, if you alreay have “after the goldrush”, this cd is not a must have.
(unless theres something to those 3 hidden tracks, which i did not find/notice. I was kinda busy making dinner while listening.)
disc 7 / live at massey hall 1971
definitely more of a “concert hall” sound, in the best possible way. two encores, first down by the river and dance dance dance, its just the crowd raging for half of track 16 until he came back with I am a child. this is a must have.
disc 8 / north country
I like harvest, I have harvest, I dont need dupes of the same tracks. the unreleased heart of gold seems alittle faster than im used to, still good, but doesnt rival any other ive heard before.
eh.. I wont spend $100 on it. *If* I didnt already have much of this it would be a score purchase at $100, but I do, already have alot of it.
If your loaded or the bills are caught up and you have nothing else pending to put that money towards, then go for it.
